Fullerton - Fullerton cops are collecting money for the $1 million bail for Officer Manuel Ramos, charged with second-degree murder following the death of homeless Kelly Thomas. Former cop Ron Thomas, father of Kelly said "They know he murdered Kelly."
Fullerton police Officer Manuel Ramos is held in strict isolation at Orange County Jail charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter over the death of Kelly Thomas. Bail has been set at $1 million; an amount his lawyer argued should be reduced as Ramos is fearful for his life in jail. Kelly’s father Ron Thomas, a former Sheriffs’s Deputy, spoke in court to request that bail should not be reduced and Judge Erick L. Larsh agreed.
Cpl. Jay Cicinelli, charged with involuntary manslaughter in the case has been released on bail of $25,000. Both officers are suspended on full pay. KTLA report that Ramos is close to being released as fellow Fullerton police officers have been collecting money to raise bail. Barry Coffman, president of the Fullerton Police Officer Association, said officers have been collecting money and have requested donations from other police unions. However he made it clear that their efforts are not endorsed by the union.
Ron Thomas has spearheaded a campaign to bring his son’s death to public attention and see justice done. Discussing the efforts police are making to raise bail for Ramos during an interview with KTLA, he stated he understood that police officers look out for one another but in this instance “They know he murdered Kelly.” He said “It’s the brotherhood sticking together no matter what, protecting each other. In this case here they need to just look at it for what it is and let him be, let the justice system take care of him. Let him stay in jail.”The Orange Country Register reported that John Barnett, the attorney acting for Ramos, has said that “his client was doing his job within department policy and ‘certainly committed no crime.’”
