Toronto - As part of its community awareness program, the Toronto Police Service invited Asian journalists to a boat ride on Lake Ontario.
The Toronto Police Service treated Asian media to a trip aboard its fast boats to promote understanding of its community policing.
In groups of 10, journalists and officials of the Asia Pacific Community Consultative Committee took turns cruising around Toronto Islands on Lake Ontario on Saturday morning.
"It's postcard-pretty," exclaims a Chinese reporter as soon as the boat slowly moved out of the police wharf from where the Toronto skyline looks beautiful. Farther into the lake, the sight was even more incredible as the sun began to peek out of the morning cloud.

For most of the boat riders, it was their first time to see an unobstructed view of Toronto from that angle, several hundred meters from the shore, on a changing background of gray and then blue.
The boat trip was as much a sight-seeing jaunt as it was educational.
For Staff Superintendent Jane Cox, it was an attempt to inform the Asia Pacific community of Toronto about law enforcement on a coastal water line extending 136 kilometers.

"The Marine Unit provides a service to insure that the waterfront community is safe," Cox explains. "It also helps police the water border between Toronto and the United States".
In addition to search and rescue, the Marine Unit also keeps an eye on people who smuggle things and people between the US and Canada, according to Cox.
The unit also fishes for evidence thrown into the lake and also assists in preventing suicides.
