Atlanta - Michael Vick has not been a starter in Atlanta since he was there in 2006. Upon his return to Atlanta, Vick was met with a mixture of boos and cheers and some Atlanta number seven jerseys as well, but the QB had to leave the game due to injury.
The Atlanta Falcons (1-1) hosted the Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) in the Sunday night game that brought Michael Vick the former number 1 pick by the Falcons in the 2001 draft back to Georgia Dome. This game put Vick the player that left the Falcons against the player that replaced him, Matt Ryan.
The Eagles opened the game with the ball and was held down as they went four plays before punting the ball away. The Falcons moved took eight plays before they were forced to punt and both defenses looked to be digging in while the offenses were trying to get adjusted. Philly then went three and out on the following drive and kicked it right back to the Falcons.
Atlanta took the ball and moved it 38-yards on the ensuing drive to score a touchdown. Matt Ryan (17/28, 195, 4 TD’s, 2 Int’s) used his arm on the drive, and Michael Turner (21 carries, 114 yards, 1 TD) used his legs to get the Falcons on the board. Ryan hit Roddy White (3 receptions, 23 yards, 1 TD) for a 2-yard touchdown pass to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead.
Philly took over on their next drive and got the offense going as they moved the ball 80-yards. Michael Vick (19/28, 242 yards, 2 TD’s, 1 Int) used his arm for most of the drive as he got the Eagles down the field in 12 plays. Vick finished the drive with a 5-yard pass Jeremy Maclin (13 receptions, 171 yards, 2 TD’s) to even things up at 7 points apiece.
The Falcons went three and out on their following drive and punted the ball back to the Eagles. The Eagles moved the ball 42-yards on this drive and got Alex Henery into field-goal position. Henery came on to kick a 22-yard field-goal that gave the Eagles a three-point, 10-7 lead. Atlanta punted the ball right back to the Eagles after going three and out on the ensuing drive.
The Eagles moved the ball pretty good on this drive as he hit Brent Celek (4 receptions, 43 yards) for a big 24-yard gain. Philly had a chance to score on this drive, but Vick fumbled the ball trying to do a fake pitch handoff that was dropped after Peria Jerry hit him and Ray Edwards picked it up. Edwards picked up the fumble and took off running only to have DeSean Jackson save a touchdown with come from behind tackle.
Edwards returned the ball 64-yards and set the Falcons up with decent field position. Ryan and the Falcons took advantage as he hit Tony Gonzalez (7 receptions, 83 yards, 2 TD’s) for an 11-yard reception then hit him for a four-yard touchdown pass. The play was reviewed but the call stood and gave the Falcons a 14-10 lead.
Vick came back on the field and tried to get the Eagles offense moving, but he fumbled on the second play of the drive. Vick was trying to run for a first down and John Abraham came from behind and knocked the ball out. The Falcons did not have it long as Ryan threw an interception on his second play of their drive. Nnamdi Asomugha picked off the pass and gave the ball right back to the Eagles. With .03 second left in the half they brought Henery on to attempt a 63-yard field-goal, but it fell short.
The Falcons opened the third quarter with the ball, but went three and out punting the ball away back to the Eagles. Vick came out and threw an interception on the first play of the drive. Kelvin Hayden intercepted the pass thrown by Vick and gave the Falcons good field position. Ryan wasted no time as the hit Mike Turner for a 32-yard reception and then hit Gonzalez for another touchdown. They hooked up on a 17-yard pass that was reviewed by upheld as the Falcons took a 21-10 lead.
The Eagles bounced right back and made quick work of their 70-yard drive which only took 4 plays. LeSean McCoy (18 carries, 95 yards, 2 TD’s) took off for a 23-yard run then Vick hit Maclin for a 36-yard touchdown pass. The Eagles got themselves back in the game with that drive and made it a 21-17 game.
On the first play if the Falcons next drive Ryan threw another interception that was picked off by Asante Samuels. The Falcons reviewed to see if he had possession of it, and he did. The Eagles took advantage of the shorten field and got McCoy in on the ground for a touchdown. The Eagles took the lead with that run which made it a 24-21 lead.
The Falcons went three and out on their next drive as they lost a yard. They punted the ball away and the Eagles took over. Philly had trouble moving the ball as they punted after four plays and they Atlanta went three and out again punting the ball right back to the Eagles.
Philly tried to get the ball moving on their next drive, but had some help as Dunta Robinson was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty that moved them 15-yards. The Eagles could not get it rolling as they were forced to punt. The Falcons continued to struggle as they were forced to punt the ball away to after going three and out.
On the Eagles ensuing drive they tried to get the ball moving but Vick got injured. Vick had collided with one of his offensive lineman and suffered a concussion. Vick was taken out the game and Mike Kafka (7/9, 72 yards) was brought in. Kafka held the ball off and McCoy took it in for a 2-yard touchdown run. McCoy’s second touchdown gave the Eagles a ten-point lead 31-21.
Atlanta took over to and moved the ball from the third quarter to the fourth. They with big passes from Ryan who hit different receivers to move the ball 84-yards on this drive, the Falcons scored to get it back close. Ryan hit his full back Ovie Mughelli for his only catch and touchdown of the day. Like that the Falcons was back in it 31-28.
The Eagles had trouble on their next drive and punted the ball away. The Falcons took over and moved the ball 77-yards on the drive. Ryan hit some key passes to get the Falcons in scoring position. Turner capped off the drive though with his legs on a three-yard run. The falcons took a 35-31 lead and sealed the victory for themselves with 4:48 left to go in the game. Kafka tried to get the Eagles going as they went 60-yards on the drive. The drive came to a halt when Kafka tried to hit Maclin to convert on fourth down.
The Falcons took some knees and then punted the ball away to seal the deal and give Matt Ryan a win verse Michael Vick and the Falcons.
