article imageJungle animals take over Edinburgh Special

By Gemma Fox     Sep 19, 2011 in Environment
Edinburgh - Scotland's capital city has found itself over run with jungle animals in recent days. Don't worry though, they haven't escaped from the zoo.
In recent days Edinburgh has been overtaken by 130 jungle animals as part of an exhibition to highlight the plight of endangered species in Asia.
The life size animal sculptures spent 20 days in Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Garden before being unleashed onto the city streets on 6 September.
The sculptures dotted around Edinburgh are life-size and the aim of the exhibition is to raise money and awareness about endangered animals in Asia and the money raised will go into conservation projects aimed at preserving species such as the Asian elephant as well as other species facing extinction like tigers and crocodiles, hornbills and orangutans.

Designed by a variety of people, ranging from Geri Halliwell to Jack Vettriano, each of the sculptures are up for sale and can be bid for on e-bay from 22 September and miniatures can be bought from Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh, or, if you're not in the city you can purchase the smaller, more manageable versions on this e-bay site.

The Jungle City website details the plight of all the species featured in the exhibition particularly that of the Asian elephant that has seen its numbers drop from 250,000 to 30,000 in the space of 100 years. The site states that the Asian elephant has lost up to 95% of its local habitat within the last 100 years contributing to such a dramatic drop in numbers.
