article imageOp-Ed: 9/11 Truth – governors, veterans, and loonies

By Alexander Baron     Sep 10, 2011 in World
Jesse Ventura is a true believer, but his credentials as a former Navy SEAL and Governor of Minnesota have not immunised him from the silliness of the 9/11 Truthers.
It is one of the great misfortunes of our times that so many big names – including scientists with impeccable credentials – have been seduced by the loonies and nutters of the 9/11 Truth Movement.
One of the biggest such names is Jesse Ventura, heck, even his monicker has charisma! And how many Americans can boast of serving as a Navy SEAL, as well as wrestling under WWF rules, acting, hosting radio and television shows, making documentaries, and holding elected office as a State Governor?
Another big name – in his own mind at any rate - is Gordon Duff, who runs the Veterans Today website.
The premise of both Jesse Ventura and Gordon Duff, and their fellow travellers, is that the American Government cannot be trusted. Is there anyone in your street who does not believe that? No government can be trusted, politicians can’t he trusted, the police cannot be trusted...We all know these things. The problem is that they draw an unwarranted corollary from these statements that is manifestly not true. Just because we can’t trust the American Government doesn’t mean that we should trust any kook or self-styled political analyst who comes along with a conspiracy “theory” about what really happened on 9/11.
Recently, Duff appeared on the News Analysis programme with the Iranian network Press TV. While we should not believe everything the Western media tells us about Iran, neither should we believe everything the Iranian media tells us about the West, not because the Iranians are inherently dishonest, but because as is clear from some of the Westerners who appear on their networks, they are inclined to give dissident voices more credibility than they deserve. This is not to say that these voices are never worth hearing, and certainly not that they should be suppressed, but they should be balanced by others who know what they are talking about.
Fortunately, this happened in this broadcast where Duff went heads up with an analyst who did, Richard Becker of the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, who unlike Duff and other conspiracy mongers does not confuse cause and effect; he stated clearly that 9/11 was used as a pretext by the Bush Administration to go to war, but ridiculed the suggestion of US Government or Israeli involvement. Unfortunately, the third guest, James Fetzer, who phoned in on Skype, went further than even Duff as far as the physics of 9/11 are concerned.
Duff’s pointing the finger at the State of Israel has predictably earned him the ire of Abraham Foxman and his misnamed Anti-Defamation League, who allude to him as an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist adding the innuendo that some of Duff’s articles have appeared on neo-Nazi and similar websites.
Although we need not pay too much attention to anything either the ADL or Foxman say, it is clear that Duff has swallowed a lot of the whackier stuff whole, and has also been confusing conspiracy theory with conspiracy fact as well as betraying his ignorance of world history. In the programme he alluded to the takeover of the American banking system in 1913, by Israeli bankers. Richard Becker pointed out that the State of Israel did not exist until 1948; he might have added that in 1913, the then nascent Zionist ideology was regarded with deep suspicion by Jewish leaders on both sides of the Atlantic.
What Duff alludes to as a takeover did in fact happen; the instigation of the Federal Reserve was plotted at Jekyll Island, and anyone who is inclined to dismiss this as a conspiracy “theory” can confirm it from any number of sources, but perhaps the easiest introduction is the speech by the American academic Murray Rothbard which can be found here.
It should perhaps come as no surprise that James Fetzer has also contributed to Duff’s website, including his musings on the Kennedy Assassination, which of course was not the work of Lee Harvey (I’m just a patsy) Oswald. Fetzer is in fact deeply involved with “researching” the Kennedy Assassination, as if this had not been done to death by 1965.
It is respectfully submitted that the litmus test of credibility as far as conspiriology is concerned, is the juxtaposition of these two incidents. In short, any individual who claims Oswald did not shoot the President or that the 9/11 attacks were not carried out by fanatics with hijacked commercial aircraft is prima facie unworthy of belief with regard to any discussion of world affairs, because the failure to accept the absolutely overwhelming evidence adduced in support of these two propositions is indicative of a totally denialist mentality.
An afterword on Jesse Ventura; two years ago, he fronted a TV series called Conspiracy Theory, which is good entertainment, but doesn’t tell us anything we don’t really know. Yes, the world is run by corrupt politicians and greedy bankers; we’ve been talking about this since Black Monday in 1987, and previous generations since the original Wall Street collapse and the Great Depression. Before that there was the South Sea Bubble, and before there were doubtless similar financial shenanigans in Ancient Rome and before. Didn’t the great JC kick the money changers out of the temple?
As for specifically government perfidy, the crimes of both the American Government and the Israeli Government are written in blood for the entire world to see; it is necessary neither to lie nor even to exaggerate in order to expose them. The same can of course be said for the British Government, and for almost every other since time immemorial.
Where Jesse Ventura is exposing financial conspiracies – ie human nature at its worst – he is on solid ground, but when he gives spurious credence to the ravings of Gordon Duff and people like him, it is all strictly showbiz, or if it isn’t, then he too has serious credibility problems.
In case the reader has any doubts about the more extreme piffle peddled by the conspiracy mongers, such as a cruise missile hitting the Pentagon or the Twin Towers being levelled by controlled explosions rather than as a result of the crashed planes, people concerned with facts rather than fantasy have debunked every single fanciful scenario; as of today, a search on YouTube for "9/11 truth debunked" brings up over 2,800 videos, the vast majority of which require no technical knowledge to appreciate.
