article imageToronto police need help to solve Jahmeel Spence's murder

By KJ Mullins     Sep 10, 2011 in Crime
Toronto - A year ago today an innocent man was senselessly gunned down in the streets of Toronto behind a row of townhouses in Scarborough.
A year ago Jameel Spence, 27, had gone out for juice for his children leaving a family BBQ. The man, with no criminal history, never made it home. Instead someone repeatedly shot the young father with at least one of the bullets striking him in the head. The killer then left, leaving Jahmeel to die on the pavement, where paramedics pronounced him dead.
Spence's family is no stranger to tragedy. Fifteen years ago his older brother was killed at Kennedy Subway station. Ishmael Spence was only 15 when he was stabbed to death.
Staff Inspector Mark Saunders of the Toronto Police Service Homicide Squad spoke today at the scene of where Jahmeel Spence was killed a year ago.

The family was holding a family memorial service. The Toronto Police Service issued a live stream of the interview with Saunders but the interview didn't capture Jahmeel's little girl, 6, asking where her daddy is or a little boy at the memorial site showing his dead father his new hat.
It is thought that Jahmeel Spence was not the intended target of the suspects. There was another person Saunders said that was being sought by the suspect(s) that mistakenly killed the father of two young children.

A light blue Honda Acura may have been involved in the murder of Spence. The police are asking if you know of someone who altered their Honda a year ago. The light blue Honda is a key element in this case. Police report that a man was seen leaving the area of 30 Greenbrae Circuit in an older−model, four−door
Honda, possibly light−blue.

Saunders said that every time there has been a public appeal there has been new evidence that has come forward in this case.
"We need more people to step up and assist us with this investigation so we can solve this investigation. So that we can make this a safe community again. Hopefully we can bring some closure for this family," Saunders said.
If you can help solve this case please consider calling Detective Wayne Banks 416-808-7411 (direct to desk) or e-mail: wayne.banks@torontopolice.on.ca
