Just when you thought food vendors at state fairs had deep-fried everything imaginable, bubblegum was introduced to the fried food frenzy, and will make its debut at the State Texas State after winning the Big Tex Choice Awards for most creative new food.
Fried food and state fairs have become synonymous but it's not the corny dogs and funnel cakes that are making news or satisfying the curiosity of hungry fair-goers this year. It's fried beer, fried butter, fried jellybeans, fried Kool-Aid and deep-fried bubblegum that has fair foodies talking.
Judges for the Big Tex Choice Awards got the first taste of all the new creations on Labor Day and after trying Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack, Deep Fried Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Deep Fried Salsa, El Bananarito, Fried Autumn Pie, Hans' Kraut Ball, Walking Taco's and Deep Fried Bubblegum, winners were named for best tasting and most creative foods available at the 2011 Texas State Fair.
'Fried Bubblegum' took the honors for most creative and 'Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack' won for the best tasting food sold at the fair, which is scheduled to open Sept. 30.
The fluffy, pink deep-fried dessert is made from a marshmallow infused with bubblegum extract, "which is where it gets its flavor," said creator Justin Martinez.. The bubblegum flavored marshmallow is dipped in a pink batter and fried, then topped with icing and candy-coated Chiclets to add to the visual appeal.
Martinez said he expects them to be a popular item for fried food fans. In a Dallas News poll, an overwhelming majority of respondent's voted fried bubblegum as the grossest new food at the fair and deep fried pineapple upside down cake as the tastiest concoction.
Past winners of the Big Tex Choice Awards include Fried Ice Cream, Fried PB, Jelly and Banana Sandwich, Fried Coke, Fried Beer™, Fried Banana Split, and Fernie's Deep Fried Peaches & Cream.
