The South African Air Force (SAAF) gave an impressive spectacle of raw power during its Air Capability Demonstration earlier this week. The event was for invited VIPs and selected media, and Digital Journal was there.
The SAAF showed its trooping, air-to-air combat and ground support as well as bombing capabilities at the Roodewal Bombing Range outside the northern city of Polokwane (previously Pietersburg).
Colonel Rama Iyer, formerly of the Indian Air Force, gives a commentary on the fighters.
The Air Force showcased ground attack by its indigenous Rooivalk helicopter, with both rocket and cannon fire, as well as casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) ground support and a mock air combat followed by bombing runs with Hawk Mk 120 fighter trainers used as light bombers and the Gripen multi-role fighter.
