Tyler - Polygamist Warren Jeffs, 55, may be in a medically induced coma just weeks after being sentenced to life in prison for sexual assault of two of his underage brides.
On Sunday night Jeffs was taken to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, Texas according to his attorney Emily Detoto.
There are conflicting media reports on Jeffs' condition. Some outlets are saying he is a coma while NPR reports that he has pneumonia. He is said to be in critical but stable condition. Prior to his illness Jeffs had been fasting for three days.
Michelle Lyons, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said, "He is responsive and expected to make a full recovery."
The exact details of Jeffs' illness have not been disclosed because of inmate privacy rules.
Jeffs is in protective custody at the Texas jail he is residing, not allowed to be involved in any work programs and restricted to his cell other than to shower or when he has solo recreation. Only 85 of the 156,000 inmates in Texas are held in protective custody.
Jeffs has a history of fasting and hurting himself while behind bars. In 2007 while in a Utah jail he banged his head on his cell walls, telling mental health workers later that he was not trying to harm himself. Also in 2007 he fasted so much that he lost 30 pounds and required medical intervention.
Last month Jeffs was sentenced to life for the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl. Both victims were part of Jeffs collection of wives. He is the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (FLDS), a sect that believes in polygamy.
Jeffs faces additional charges in October for first-degree bigamy.
