From Oct. 15, 1951 to May 6, 1957, the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) aired the black-and-white television series “I Love Lucy.” The story surrounded Lucy and Ricky Ricardo and their best friends and landlords Fred and Ethel Mertz.
The series was a success in the United States and was nominated and won multiple Emmy Awards. The show still airs in dozens of languages in numerous countries. Time listed “I Love Lucy” as one of the best 100 television shows of all-time.
60 years later, “America’s favourite foursome” will be live on stage for the world premiere of the tribute musical comedy “I Love Lucy Live on Stage,” according to a news release
. It debuts on Oct. 1 at the Greenway Court Theatre
in Los Angeles.
The tribute show will be set in the 1950s and will contain “filming” of two episodes in the Ricardos’ memorable New York City apartment. It will feature a television studio host, vintage live musical commercials and The Ricky Ricardo Orchestra at the “Tropicana Nightclub” – conducted by Wayne Moore.
“There will never be another television character like Lucy Ricardo,” said director Rick Sparks. “We recognize that there was only one original cast, so we’re not going to attempt any impersonation of their immense talents. Our task is to send a valentine to the unforgettable residents of 623 E 68th Street, as well as to the fresh style and commercial awakening of early 1950s television. Our plan is to honor and celebrate this iconic show, and that experience will begin the moment audiences step onto the sidewalk in front of the theater.”
It will be adapted for the stage by Kim Flagg and Sparks and produced by Flagg and Hyra George. The musical will be presented by S. Kahn Presents and Millrock Company.
