article imageBRC figures reveal 7,599 trading hours lost during UK riots

By Christopher Bates     Aug 24, 2011 in Business
Courtesy of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), shocking figures have been released regarding the impact the UK riots had on trading.
899 stores were said to be affected by the riots, alongside 11,088 members of staff.
The disorder led to a loss of 7,599 trading hours, while seven shops were set alight and 61 were burgled. 102 stores also had stock stolen, with 187 suffering damage.
The impacted businesses - which make up 27% of UK retail sales - may have seen justice prevail, as the prison population in England and Wales recently hit 86,654 - an all-time high.
BRC's findings will now be submitted to the police and will be used during the trials of alleged offenders.
BRC Director of Business Tom Ironside said: "The thousands of people who work in shops have been the forgotten victims of the riots.
"The scenes of violence and looting which broke out two weeks ago were frightening even for the majority of us who were watching them on television or reading about them in the papers."
