Toronto - A man, considered a high risk offender and alleged to have profited off of the proceeds of female victims he employs as sex workers, was arrested by Toronto Police on Tuesday . Police now are asking for any other victims to come forward in the case.
Mark Anthony Burton, AKA "Ricky Downey" and "Playboy", has been charged with numerous sex crime related charges including two counts of procuring a person to become a prostitute, living on the avails of prostitution and sexual assault.
Constable Wendy Drummond, Corporate Communications for Toronto Police, said during a phone interview that the suspect is known to the police and has preyed on women in the past.
"This is not the first time the suspect has been in police custody. He is known throughout Toronto for offenses like the ones he was charged with on Tuesday," Drummond said, "The accused has been actively trying to procure young woman to become sex workers."
Drummond said that in the past Burton has had a violent criminal history including sexual assault.
Staff Inspector Greg McLean, Sex Crimes Unit, said that his unit will do as much as they can to provide victim services to those who come forward during a phone interview. McLean stressed the need for victims to come forward.
"The focus of this investigation is on the individual who is procuring and living off of the avails of these individuals. We look upon these witnesses as victims of offenses of this individual," McLean stated.
