article imageOp-Ed: Woman's breast implant explodes after being hit with a paintball

By Christopher Bates     Aug 24, 2011 in Sports
Croydon - Paintballing has always been associated with minor injuries, but for one British woman it was excruciating. After being shot with a paintball at 190mph, her breast implant exploded.
The anonymous 26-year-old was in agony after the incident, which is thought to be the first of its kind.
The injury - which the woman initially thought was a painful bruise - took place at the the Paintzone Paintball Park near Croydon, South London.
A spokesman for UK Paintball - the company who run the park - said: "Part of the fun of paintball is that it hurts a bit when you get shot but in all the years we've been going we've never seen an incident like this.
"It came as a real surprise to hear that a woman had her implant burst at one of our centres."
"We want to ensure nothing like this happens ever again.
"We're now providing additional padding around the chest region to any surgically enhanced female participants.
"They just need to contact their local venue, tell them they have fake breasts, let them know their bra size and then the centre will take care of the rest."
The former president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, Douglas McGeorge, revealed the injury could cost around £3,000.
He added: "This is very, very unusual and this woman was very unlucky.
"I imagine she was quite slim because the paintball would have had to pierce the skin to rupture the implant.
"I have heard some odd stories over the years but this is one of the strangest.
"And it could prove very costly. She could have to pay up to £3,000 to get the implant replaced."
