PETA will join thousands of corporations who are standing in line to apply for the newly created XXX domain address to protect their names
from being picked up by individuals wanting to exploit a well known brand on the recently announced X-rated Internet address.
PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt said, "We realize that to reach different people we have to use different approaches. You have to be creative, and we feel this is an effective way to reach a different group of individuals to promote veganism."
The animal rights activists, known for their advertising campaigns that utilize celebrities posing nude to spread their anti-fur message, have gone one step further in their marketing approach with their plan to create the erotica website.
The idea with the porn site will be to raise awareness of the vegan lifestyle, said Rajt. "We plan to grab people's attention by showing them a variety of pornographic pictures interspersed with graphic images of animals to get people talking about veganism, and the changes they can make in their lives to support the rights of animals."
Rajt points out that a person who lives a vegan lifestyle can save the lives of over 100 animals per year.
"The website will be generally geared to promoting a healthier vegan lifestyle but will contain enough adult content to qualify for the XXX domain," said Rajt. "The images of both extremes will compliment each other."
Asked if PETA will employ porn stars like Jenna Jameson
, Sasha Grey
and Ron Jeremy
, all who have posed nude for PETA in past advertising campaigns, Rajt said, "PETA will produce all their own content. At this time we are still in the development phase of the XXX site. We plan to use everyday people in the beginning. Photographs of the guy and girl next door. We may include celebrities in the future but for now we are just working to get the site up and running."
PETA used the porn stars to promote an advertising campaign to spay and neuter animals by saying "To much sex is a bad thing," when it comes to pets having unprotected sex.
Jameson was also used by PETA to draw attention to animal cruelty
suffered by chickens who eventually become nuggets for the McDonald's restaurant chain.
PETA will be submitting the new XXX site for approval in the fall with a start-up for the website expected by the end of the year, according to Rajt, who said they don't know how long it will take ICAN to approve the content of their new porn site. But they expect that it will get people talking when it's finally unveiled.
