article imageNFL: Cardinals lock-up Larry Fitzgerald until 2018

By Austin Tyler     Aug 21, 2011 in Sports
The one Arizona Cardinal that has been the corner of their organization is Larry Fitzgerald, and yesterday the Cardinals took the time to pay him and lock him up as such. One of the most dominant receivers of late is now paid as one.
The Arizona Cardinals took the time yesterday to lock-up their most explosive offensive weapon in Larry Fitzgerald. The third overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft got an eight-year extension that will pay him $120 million, and keep him in a Cardinals uniform for probably the rest of his career. Fitzgerald came in the NFL at the age of 19 and has signed big deal after big deal with the organization. Fitzgerald said this about the opportunity to start and finish with the one organization in the Cardinals.
It is an honor, I am so fortunate. Not many players have that opportunity but Michael has allowed me that opportunity and I just want to repay him with great effort and winning. That is what is important.
Cardinals President Michael Bidwill had this to say about Fitzgerald
The Cardinals' intent is to have Fitzgerald retire as a Cardinal, but not anytime soon.
This deal is the richest deal in the NFL right now and with the guarantee of $50 million, this is now by far the biggest deal in their franchise history. Also with this deal Fitzgerald is now the highest paid receiver in the NFL at $15 million a year. The only other players to have a better contract deal then he are quarterbacks in the NFL.
Fitzgerald had this to say about the deal and the organization
Growing up, since I was 7 years old, this has been the game I love and something I have been so passionate about, and to have to talk about it on the business side is a little bit uncomfortable. But I am really happy to put it behind us and it wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for the Bidwill family's hard work in making this thing happen.
The Cardinals did exactly what they wanted to do by locking him up long term. They said after the lockout was over that they wanted to get the deal done before the start of the regular season, and that is just what they did.
Since being with the organization Fitzgerald has been a great guy off the field as well as on it. Fitzgerald is franchise leader in receptions with 613, and only needs 294 yards to become the franchise leader in receiving yards also which may get done in the first two weeks of the season. Off the field Fitzgerald has been a pillar in the community and has been seen on many of NFL charity commercials.
Standing at 6-foot-3, 218 pounds, he has a topped the 1,000 yards receiving mark in five of his seven NFL seasons. Despite the Cardinals suffering with the worst offense in the NFL, Fitzgerald still managed to get 1,000 plus yards last season. The only years he did not have a 1,000 yards receiving was his rookie season and in 2006 when he only played in 13 games and finished with 946 yards.
His last contract had a no-trade clause and a the ability to not be franchise-tagged which is a great deal when it comes to getting paid your worth.
