article imageRon Paul wins NH straw poll and raises more than $1.5 million

New Castle - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul received two notable presents on his birthday Saturday, easily winning the New Hampshire straw poll and raising more than $1.5 million dollars in a single day's 'money bomb.'
Twelve-term congressman and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul celebrated his birthday on Saturday, handily winning the New Hampshire straw poll and raising more than $1.5 million in a birthday "money bomb" fund-raiser.
Paul's New Hampshire win showcased the considerable gap between the Libertarian-minded candidate and his fellow Republican peers in a key primary state and among the key youth vote. The New Hampshire straw poll was organized by the New Hampshire Young Republicans, and Dr. Paul took the contest easily with 45 percent of the vote, according to the Concord Monitor.
The results showed Paul with 45 percent, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at second with 10 percent, Congressman Thaddeus McCotter and Texas Governor Rick Perry tied for third at 8 percent. Fellow Libertarian and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, who has been campaigning exclusively in New Hampshire, received only 6 percent of the vote, ahead of Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and pizza chief executive Herman Cain.
Billed as "the outsider's outsider" by the Minnesota Star Tribune, Ron Paul demonstrated his grassroots appeal on Saturday, raising more than $1.5 million in a single-day "money bomb" event, according to the Paul campaign web site.
"Paul, 75, with the message of less government and more liberty, has quietly built the largest grassroots network in the GOP field," the Minnesota Star Tribune reported. "And although he gets dismissed by pundits as a niche candidate, he remains a force in the Republican race."
Dr. Paul is next slated to participate in the MSNBC presidential debate on September 7, according to his web site.
