article imageOp-Ed: NFL: Eli Manning says he is in the same class as Tom Brady

By Austin Tyler     Aug 17, 2011 in Sports
New York - In a post practice interview with a New York reporter Eli Manning was asked some questions, but the answers he gave was a bit much. Having confidence is a good thing, but thinking you're as good as the 2010 NFL MVP is another question.
I don't like going in on players like this but Eli Manning I feel is beyond disrespectful for saying 1. He is a top 10 quarterback and 2. He is in the same category as Tom Brady. Not only that, Eli tried to take the time ans justify him throwing 25 interceptions last year to his 31 touchdowns. My question after hearing this Are u serious? The first thing that popped into my head was, Just because you have a Super Bowl ring and David Tyree's catch made you a Super Bowl MVP instead of the Justin Tuck being named it who dominated the game, does not make u an Top 10 QB. Most people that watched that game will tell you that the New York Giants defense was the real reason the Giants won Super Bowl XLII. The Giants' defensive line put more pressure on Tom Brady then any team put on him the whole season. Tuck recorded two sacks and a forced fumble while giving Brady all kind of trouble by being in his face the whole game. Even on Justin Tuck's Wikipedia's page it says Due to the game's low score, opinions were heavily waged that Tuck was more deserving of the MVP award than Eli Manning.
Since Eli been in the NFL here are his numbers.
Year Att Comp Pct Yds TD Int Rtg
2004 197 95 48.2 1043 6 9 55.4
2005 557 294 52.8 3762 24 17 75.9
2006 522 301 57.7 3244 24 18 77.0
2007 529 297 56.1 3336 23 20 73.9
2008 479 289 60.3 3238 21 10 86.4
2009 509 317 62.3 4021 27 14 93.1
2010 539 339 62.9 4002 31 25 85.3
Total 3145 1824 58.0 21329 146 104 80.4
The only season that he threw less than half as many interceptions as he did touchdowns was in 2008. I thought about putting up his playoff numbers, but that would really do him no justice. In the 2005 Playoff game against the Carolina Panthers where they got beat 23-0 and Eli Manning threw zero touchdowns and had three interceptions. In 2008 Eli Manning and the Giants played the Philadelphia Eagles after coming off a first round bye. Eli threw two interceptions and zero touchdowns in a 23-11 loss. The best post-season he had was when they won Super Bowl when he had 6 touchdowns to just one interception.
"The Micheal Kay Show" on ESPN Radio 1050 FM asked Are you in the Tom Brady class?
Eli's answer to the question was this
I consider myself in that class and Tom Brady is a great quarterback, he’s a great player and what you’ve seen with him is he’s gotten better every year and he started off winning championships and I think he’s a better quarterback now than what he was, in all honesty, when he was winning those championships, It’s funny, you say well he won championships, but the team, but I think know he’s grown up and gotten better every year and that’s what I’m trying to do. I kind of hope these next seven years of my quarterback days are my best.

Is Eli Manning really a Top 10 quarterback? To me I would have to say No. This is my Top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL right now that I feel are better than Eli Manning
1. Tom Brady
2. Peyton Manning
3. Aaron Rodgers
4. Ben Rothlisberger
5. Drew Brees
6. Donovan McNabb
7. Mike Vick
8. Philip Rivers
9. Matt Ryan
10. Joe Flacco
The last 5 have not won a Superbowl ring, but since being in the NFL they have been way more consistent then he can ever be. If he wants to be put in a category with anyone it will be the Trent Dilfer category. Just like Dilfer's defense, Eli's defense carried him to a Super Bowl victory. Eli Manning is a good QB, but he has only lasted in the NFL because of his dad Archie Manning and his brother Peyton Manning.
