article imageEvolution of French Cuisine: Baguettes sold at vending machine

By Andrew Moran     Aug 15, 2011 in Business
Paris - The baguette comes with every meal at all times of the day. One innovative baker has come up with a vending machine that gives the French fresh baguettes. The process is very similar to the Western machine of chocolate bars and chips.
From the standard vending machine at the office that offers chocolate bars, potato chips and cookies to the more specialized, complex machine that sells gold bullion, wine, shoes, iPods, pizza, books and many other products. The vending machine has evolved over the past several years.
In France, one baker has come up with a successful idea that gives Parisians fresh baguettes at all hours of the day.
According to a video report from the Associated Press, Jean-Louis Hecht, a baker, has established a coin-operated vending machine outside of his bakeries in Paris and Hombourg-Haut that sell baguettes.
The baguettes are pre-cooked, placed in the vending machine and is then heated up when it is purchased. It costs one euro ($1.42)
The machine, which cost 50,000 euros ($71,000), was first opened in January in northeast France. It sold approximately 1,600 baguettes. In July, it sold nearly three times as much with 4,500 dispensed. If business continues this way, the machine will be paid off within a year.
“This is the bakery of tomorrow,” said Hecht in an interview with the London Telegraph. “If other bakers don't want to enter the niche, they're going to get decimated.”
A proprietor of a small bakery in central Paris, Jean-Luc Avel, also told the Telegraph that since the French love their baguettes with their meals, and “can’t be bothered to go to the boulangerie twice a day,” that they will want the 24-hour dispensaries, which “will mean the end of the traditional boulangerie.”
Hecht called the dispensary “keeping up with the times.” He compared it to banks where everyone would go to a branch teller and now they use an ATM. “Today, everybody goes to the bakery. Tomorrow they'll go to the baguette dispenser."
What will vending machines evolve into next? Marijuana vending machines? Oh wait…
