Austin - Texas Governor Rick Perry plans to announce he is joining the race for the Republican nomination for the next presidential candidate, according to a spokesman from the Perry camp.
Associated Press reported, Perry spokesman Mark Miner said "the three-time Texas governor would make his intentions known on Saturday while visiting South Carolina and New Hampshire."
Miner's statement to the AP came hours before the GOP debate last night in Iowa.
Mike Huckabee (R), former Arkansas Governor, took the governor to task for trying to upstage the debate by choosing to announce his run for the White House on the day of the Iowa straw poll planned for Saturday, which he said was 'disrespectful to the Iowa process."
Huckabee told Fox News:
“It’s a tactical blunder … The people of Iowa work very hard to make the straw poll the biggest political moment in the summer. If you have a candidate who says, ‘You know what, I’m not gonna be there, I’m gonna be over in South Carolina, trying to pull as much attention as possible away from your big event’ – I’ll tell you, the people of Iowa are gracious, loving, kind people, and they’re not gonna take kindly to someone, in essence, dissing their big event. Which is what it will be reviewed as in the state of Iowa.”
Gov. Perry, who is seen a viable candidate for the Republican nomination for the Presidency, has been courting private donors and increasing his base of support for the past few weeks in anticipation of his announcement.
The Texas governor told the Des Moines Register "someone or something has called him to run for president. I’m not ready to tell you that I’m ready to announce that I’m in. But I’m getting more and more comfortable every day that this is what I’ve been called to do. This is what America needs," reported Digital Journal.
