Toronto - An off-duty Toronto police officer has died following an accident in Vaughan this afternoon. Early reports say that the officer was on a motorcycle and was hit by a dump truck while pulling into a driveway.
The officer was killed just after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. At this time York Police are investigating the incident. Traffic on Highway 7 is being rerouted as the investigation continues.
According to witnesses there were two men riding on motorcycles when one was hit by a dump truck. The motorcycle went up in flames.
The police are in the process of notifying the family.
Constable Tony Vella said in a statement, "It is with great sadness that the Toronto Police Service informs the public of the death of Constable Riccardo Torchia, 30. On Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at 2 p.m., Constable Torchia was off−duty at the time and operating a motorcycle on Highway 7, in Vaughan, when he was involved in a collision."
