article imageMan is robbed while inside a church praying

By Cynthia Trowbridge     Jul 31, 2011 in Crime
A man had entered St. John and Bernard Parish to spend some time praying a little after 2 p. m. on Friday. But he left with a stunning robbery story.
The man who is not being identified was sitting in a pew praying when he felt something poke him in his back. A male told the man he had a gun and to take his wallet out and give him all the money he had in it.
The parishioner did exactly what he was told to do.
The herald-palladium.com reports Detective Wes Smigielski of the Benton Harbor Police Department said, "It's unknown whether he actually had a gun or not, but the victim was told it was a gun. The victim took out all his money - he didn't know how much it was - and the suspect grabbed the money and ran."
Smigielski said the alleged robber is described as being a medium-complected black man, between 18-21 years old, and 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet tall. He said the man was wearing gray shorts and a gray shirt, and had an orange bandanna wrapped around his hand.
Detectives were shocked that the robbery took place in broad daylight and inside a church.
wsbt.com quotes Smigielski said, "You never think it’s going to happen at a church, and it did."
Michiananews.com reports the alleged robber may have had two other people with him when he left the church.
