article imageNFL: Plaxico Burress lands in New York, but with the Jets

Newark - Fresh out of prison the question was which team would take a chance on a 34-year old that has not played football in nearly two years. The answer was clear Sunday morning when the Jets gave him a one-year deal with the team.
The New York Jets had just given Santonio Holmes a 5-year deal on Wednesday, and still had the option of bringing back Braylon Edwards but decided to go in a different direction with Plaxico Burress. The deal is worth $3.017 million for one-year. This is really no surprise as the Jets were looking at Burress before he ended up going to jail two years ago.
Burress served 20-months in a New York correctional facility on a gun charge that took place in a night club. Burress took a visit to see two former teams in the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers, but decided to land with the Jets. It was also said that he also met with the San Francisco 49ers.
The reason the Jets took advantage of the Burress situation instead of bringing back Edwards is because he will not lower his asking price. This will probably be Edwards’s last chance to get a big money contract so he is doing the right thing.
In the end Burress will give Mark Sanchez another option, but a 6’5” option compared to Holmes who is 5’11”. We will have to wait and see if Burress can knock the rust off and go back to his Pro Bowl form before the shooting and jail time. As of right now he has career numbers of 505 catches for 7,845 yards for 55 touchdowns. The Jets need him to add drastically to those numbers if they want to be a factor in this Super Bowl run.
