Philadelphia - A television reporter and a video journalist were attacked while broadcasting live from the scene of what is being called the most bizarre case of animal hoarding in the history of Philadelphia.
Chris O'Connell, a reporter for Fox 29, was standing outside the home of a man charged with animal cruelty when he was attacked by the man's son during Philly's 10 p.m. news.
The man can be seen on camera at the beginning of the segment and heard saying "that's my property." He then lunged at O'Connell and was momentarily pulled away by video journalist Dave Edwards, according to Fox News. SPCA officers who were on the scene of the late night raid at the Philadelphia home were able to subdue the man and restrain him until officers arrived and arrested him. He was charged with resisting arrest and assault.
O'Connell was able to compose himself to finish his nightly news report on the hoarding case that involved both live and dead dogs, turtles, iguanas, roosters, chickens and a four foot alligator.
O'Connell said the man was disturbed by his presence at the home which is owned by his father. Animal welfare investigators were searching the residence after repeated complaints of a stench by neighbors of the man.
The pet menagerie included many dead and mummified animals which were discovered in the two-hour long search of the packed home that appeared to owned by an alleged hoarder.
Fox News reported police have responded to complaints about the property numerous time over a few year period but were unable to get a search warrant to enter the property. "That all changed on Tuesday when the owner was found sitting naked outside his home. Officers also spotted a dead iguana giving them probable cause to go inside."
O'Connell said he and Edwards were not physically injured in the assault.
