article imageOp-Ed: If the rich won’t pay taxes, why should anyone else?

By Paul Wallis     Jul 24, 2011 in Politics
Washington - The Great Ideal of Capitalism, not paying taxes and letting everyone else pick up the tab, is one of the basic issues involved in dealing with the US debt ceiling. How about if the public doesn't pay taxes, either?
Apparently the US doesn’t need revenue. By default, that means it doesn’t need police, courts, the military or politicians’ wages.
This advanced level of brilliance has been rattling around like a pensioner who’s just eaten a pea since the days of the Robber Barons. The general impression is that if you’re rich, you don’t need to be economically or otherwise literate. Paying taxes is “socialism”. Even the idea of contributing to society in any way includes that terrible thought. Buying a stamp makes you a communist.
Interestingly, there’s one part of society which also doesn’t pay taxes, never has and never will- Criminals. Organized crime, the biggest industry on Earth, seems to struggle on without paying taxes or even thinking about paying them. In fairness, all they do is help themselves to other people's property, kill and maim people and make life unbearable on a second by second basis around the world. The ultra-privileged “social elites” of the West couldn’t possibly be accused of doing that, now could they?
Tax evasion, that famous national sport, is considered to be smart, a virtual entitlement. Only fools pay taxes.
So it’s fair to ask- What if everyone else decided not to pay taxes, so they could be smart too, and maybe even run around telling people how smart they are, which seems to be the social norm?
Better yet, how about the US going from the “world’s only super power” to the “world’s only super-deadbeat”? Sounds classy, doesn’t it. Lenders will applaud, and smitten with the idea, won’t pay their debts either. Who needs the finance sector, anyway? All it ever does is get bailed out, the world could save some money there.
In short, what’s so wrong with sending the world bankrupt as well as the country?
The Marriage of the Obscene, the nuptials of Greed and Insanity, will occur on 2 August 2011. Participants are requested to send flowers to an appropriate location in an insular Federal territory in their country.
The honeymoon will include a scenic tour of hell. Tourists are required to make applications to the local authorities for photographic permission. A fee will apply- If you happen to have a soul.
