Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave and The Nightwatchman guitarist, is slated to write a comic book series, Orchid to be released October 12, 2011.
Best known for powerful lyrics and hard hitting cords, Tom Morello is taking his stance on social justice to panels and word bubbles. Dark Horse Comics, known for publishing fan favorite Joss Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer and My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way's Umbrella Academy, has picked up Orchid.
Orchid was launched Wednesday night in San Diego, California at Comic-Con 2011.
The series is about the "Spartacus of whores," Morello told the Los Angeles Times.
“I was an avid comic collector as a kid and teen and I put down comics when I picked up a guitar,” Morello told the LA Times, “comics have matured while I was away.”
After selling 30 million records Morello turned to a new medium to spread his message to the masses.
Orchid is a fantasy epic set in the future and the story follows a 16-year old prostitute. The young woman discovers a greater calling in the dystopia where she lives. Here, a deadly animal species prey on humans. Meanwhile the rich harvest the bodies of the poor, controlling them as slaves.
According to the Dark Horse press release residents live in "swamp-like shantytowns" and under "iron fisted rule."
Morello is clearly taking his stance on class struggle to the pages and panels of Dark Horse. Each issue will also come with an exclusive audio track written and recorded by Morello and will serve as each book's soundtrack.
Orchid will be illustrated by Scott Hepurn who previously illustrated issues of Star Wars for Dark Horse Comics. Renowned street artist (you might remember his Obama Hope poster) and mastermind behind OBEY, Shepard Fairey, will contribute a special collectors cover for the first issue.
Morello is a Grammy award winning Guitarist who has a degree from Harvard University, he is also the co-founder of the nonprofit organization Axis of Justice.
