San Diego - From best dresser to best fashion designer. That's how this Filipino American evolved in the last 10 years perfecting the craft he has been exposed to early on within his family.
TORONTO - When he graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego's North County, Shaun Samson was the school's best dressed student.
Almost 12 years later, Shaun's inherent fashion sense would put him on top of his peers, this time not as a wearer but as the designer himself.
The San Diego-born American of Filipino descent this week won the prestigious "Collection of the Year Award" at the International Talent Prize in Trieste, Italy.

The couple Sam and Liz Samson, Shaun's proud parents, relayed this bit of good news about his winning during a phone interview from their business headquarters in National City, California where they run their own phone dealership.
Shaun had been studying fashion design at the Central Saint Martin College in London from where he also graduated recently with a bachelor's and master's degrees in menswear.
At the ITS tenth anniversary event in Italy, he bested seven other finalists from other countries. The selection was made by jurors that included prominent names in the fashion world like Viktor & Rolf, Hillary Alexander, Antonio Berardi, Renzo Rosso and Mandi Lennard.
"I'm just speechless and overwhelmed - I genuinely didn't think that I was going to win," Shaun was quoted by Vogue.com after he was adjudged the winner. "I'm so grateful to ITS and the jurors for providing me with the foundations of which I can build my dreams upon."

Last year's winner, Takashi Nishigani from Japan, handed the coveted "Collection of the Year Award". And with it comes a prize money of 15,000 euros.
Vogue.com's news account states: "The San Diego-born designer showed a collection of men's knitwear, which took simplicity, in the structure and silhouette of oversized shifts paired with cigarette trousers, and paired it with complexity of construction: fabrics were manipulated in order to merge thick Argyle knits, distinctive Scottish tartans and an array of flannel wool."
Shaun's early exposure to fashion, according to his parents, has been through his mom Liz, who is quite a dresser herself. His designer instinct was developed growing up with his dad Sam, who is a draftsman/illustrator; a grandfather who is a painter; and a sister who also dabbles in painting.
Shaun has four associate degrees (fashion and design, manufacturing, international product development and advanced fashion) at the Fashion Institute of Design In Los Angeles, California, his dad said in an interview.
