Japan won the Women's World Cup in a suspenseful penalty shootout against the United States, after both sides were tied 2-2 during the last stretches of the final game in Frankfurt, Germany.
Two-time former FIFA champions, the Americans lost three of their penalties and Japan moved forward, winning the shootout 3-1.
Captain Homare Sawa set up the penalty shootout in a thrilling final when she flicked in a shot off a corner kick in the second hour.
The Americans, ranked as the top team in the world, played very well, prevailing over France during the semi finals. But ultimately, the U.S. was denied the chance to lift the cup for a third time.
The victory for Japan means they are the first Asian nation to win the Women's World Cup.
