Orlando - Casey Anthony walked out of the Orange County Jail just after midnight today a free woman after spending the past three years of her life in the Florida jail accused of murdering her 2-year-old daughter.
Anthony was released from the jail, under the watchful eye of armed guards, following her conviction on four counts of lying to police in the investigation of the death of her child.
Casey Anthony was acquitted of first-degree murder in the death of her daughter Caylee earlier this month. She was sentenced to four years in jail on the lying charges but with time served and credit for good behavior, she was not required to serve the full sentence. Anthony was fined $1000 for each of the four counts of lying and ordered to pay court costs for a total 4,618.
Anthony was escorted by her attorney Jose Baez when she left the jail this morning. She was reportedly taken to the Orlando Executive Airport were she boarded a private plane, according to ABC News.
Anthony has received multiple death threats since the jury found her not guilty on the murder charges. Her destination following release is still a mystery, with most news reports saying she would be taken to a safe house where she will be protected at her own expense for at least a few weeks.
CBS News reports that Anthony was afraid to leave jail. Attorney Charles Greene said "she was emotionally unstable and needed a little breathing room after the draining two-month trial."
Law enforcement officers at the Orange County Jail kept the crowd of about 1,000 spectators at a safe distance from Anthony while she made her getaway from the mob of reporters who gathered at the jail awaiting her release. Many of the demonstrators outside the jail held signs and shouted 'Justice for Caylee,' 'Honk for Caylee,' 'We hate you Casey' and "Killer."
Some supporters of Casey Anthony have sent money to her commissary account at the jail following the announcement of the not guilty verdict. Jail officials said Anthony had $537.68 on her when she was released, according to news reports.
Attorneys for Anthony filed a Notice of Appeal at the Orange County Courthouse on Friday. Anthony is appealing the conviction of lying to police investigators. Attorney's also filed a Motion for Finding of Indigency For Appeal, if granted by the judge taxpayers will continue to pay her expenses related to the appeal.
