Keith Mina Caputo, the lead singer for the alternative rock band Life of Agony, has taken to Twitter to publicly announce to her fans that she is transsexual.
Caputo first opened up to fans on Twitter on July 7 with the a message that read, "M2F transsexuals like mĂȘ are the women who give up male privilege for femininity! Threaten the patriarchy!"
Today the rocker said on her Twitter account, @keithminacaputo, "YES I'm Transsexual & PROUD. Clearly I'm not ashamed. I deeply thank all who have shown me much support in the recent days ESP on Twitter."
The musician later told her Twitter followers that the press was spreading false information about her transition from male to female and the complete story will come out upon Caputo's return to New York in August.
Caputo is on tour with the band Life of Agony in Europe this week, with concerts scheduled over the weekend in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. "Life of Agony was formed in 1989 by Caputo, guitarist Joey Z and bassist Alan Robert. Sal Abruscato soon joined the trio as the drummer. In 1993 Life of Agony released their first album with Roadrunner Records. After three albums Caputo left the band claiming, her heart was no longer in the type of music they performed and then departed from the group," according to Wikipedia.
Life of Agony reunited for a pair of sold-out shows in New York in 2003. This led to the band performing in a number of festivals around the world and to the recording of some new music.
Caputo's disclosure today should come as no surprise to fans who follow her website. She has referred to herself with feminine pronouns when making announcements on the fan page, and on myspace for sometime. Most recently when issuing a statement that her email account had been hacked.
Fans and followers of Caputo's have responded positively to her transition on Twitter. One fan tweeted, "It takes courage to be true to yourself especially if it alienates others. At least u find out who really cares about u."
