Fuyang - Chinese news reports a two-year-old toddler fell 10 floors from an opened apartment window and was miraculously caught and saved by a woman walking by the building.
The little girl was was visiting her grandmother in China's Zhejiang Province on Saturday. She was left unattended while her grandmother went to run an errand. The toddler, named Zhang Fangyu but known by the name Niu Niu, managed to open a window and crawl out on the ledge, according to Chinese News TV.
Wu Juping, 31, a mother of one, was passing by the apartment building when she saw the child hanging from the windowsill, she 'kicked off her shoes' and began to run towards Niu Niu, to attempt to break the toddler's fall.
Wu said, "It was so urgent. I saw her when she was about to fall and rushed there, and after tens of seconds she fell off," reports AP. She stretched her arms towards the air and managed to catch the child, saving her from certain death.
A neighbor who witnessed the incident said, "Niu Niu clung to the windowpane for about two minutes and then fell to the ground," reports Xinhuanet News.
The impact knocked Wu out and fractured her arm. The child suffered from internal bleeding. Both were hospitalized for their injuries in nearby Fuyang.
A hospital spokesman said the child was in critical condition, but was expected to live. Wu will need surgery to repair her arm. Wu has been offered free care by the hospital for her heroism, said news reports.
Wu is being called a heroine and an angel by thousands of people in China. "When Wu reached out to the child, she put her own life at risk," said Jin Dengfeng, the hospital's president. "She could have died or been paralyzed for the rest of her life if the child had hit her head or back," reports Xinhuanet.
The story went viral on Weibo.cn, the Chinese version of Twitter. One Weibo member posted, "In dynamic terms it would be impossible to catch the child, but in a world with love, everything is possible."
