Newmarket - York Regional Police have charged a 15-year-old with First-Degree Murder in the death of on duty officer Constable Garrett Styles. Styles died yesterday morning after being pinned under a stolen vehicle.
The youth was charged with murder last night in his hospital room. The suspect has been remanded into the custody of the Correctional Service of Canada. His first court appearance is scheduled for July 7 in Newmarket.
The teen is still undergoing treatment from the accident Tuesday morning that claimed the life of Constable Styles.
York Regional Police report that Constable Styles pulled over a 2005 Dodge Caravan with four occupants. While investigating the driver at the driver's side door the vehicle accelerated. Constable Styles was dragged 300 metres before the van rolled over. Styles was trapped underneath the van. East Gwillimbury Emergency Services firefighters extricated Constable Styles from beneath the van and he was rushed to Southlake Regional Health Centre. Constable Styles died from his injuries shortly afterward.
The driver of the van was seriously injured. The three other passengers were not seriously injured and have cooperated with the ongoing investigation.
