After being on the run for the past 16 years, James J. "Whitey" Bulger, the notorious Boston mob boss, was captured in Santa Monica, California on Wednesday night.
The capture was reported by KTLA News in Los Angeles. Bulger is accused of committing 19 murders. He was on the FBI's 10 most wanted list. He was arrested along with his companion Catherine Greig whose face was shown in an FBI ad on several television stations around the country. The FBI was hoping that by showing her face, it would lead to Bulger and it did. The pair were arrested without incident in Santa Monica.
In Boston the arrest of Bulger was on the front page of the Boston Herald and Boston Globe newspapers. The 80-year-old Bulger was living in an apartment in Santa Monica with Greig when they were arrested. The FBI was offering $100,000 in reward money for information on the two. It was also reported that Greig had been harboring Bulger. The Academy Award winning movie 'The Departed', starring Jack Nicholson was based on the life of the Boston mobster. There were many people who thought that Bulger would never be caught, but that all came to an end tonight.
