article imageInterview with 'Go the F*** to Sleep' illustrator Ricardo Cortés Special

By Sam Halaby     Jun 21, 2011 in Entertainment
Ricardo Cortés, illustrator for the popular 'Go the F*** to Sleep' book featured on The Late Show with David Letterman, speaks to Digital Journal about his work and another up-and-coming project he's working on.
How did you and Adam Mansbach hook up to illustrate his book?
Adam and I have been friends for years. I've known of his novels, and he's been up on my quirky list of children's books (www.Rmcortes.com/books), so it was natural that eventually we teamed up to work on something. We had a great chemistry during the production of the story; I think our background helped us fast forward the small talk and get really busy really fast.
What did you think of Samuel L. Jackson reading the book on the Late Show with David Letterman?
I was there! In the audience. It was hilarious. It was surreal. What a sweet man to be able to say "F**k" so well!
Your bio on Amazon.com says you're working on a book about coffee, Coca-Cola, and cocaine. Can you give us a hint of what it entails? Children's book?
Sure! No, it's not a kid's book. It's for adults and it's a strange hybrid of a picturebook, a graphic novel, and a historical essay. It's about the long, mostly-unkown history of the Coca-Cola Company and their relationship to coca leaf and cocaine. I'm still researching the story, so no due date on it, but you can see a very sneak peek at: www.CoffeeCocaCola.com.
Would you recommend this book actually be read to children, or is it strictly for humour for adults?
Oh, that depends on your parenting philosophy. Adam's been pretty clear he thinks it's strictly for adults. I think the art of cursing needs to be handled professionally.
Woud you say parenting is getting increasingly stressful?
Ah, but believe it or not, I am not yet a parent. So, I can only guess: I'll say, No, it's getting easier and easier every day. Just kidding.
