How would you invest money over the course of a decade? On the stock market? Perhaps in a savings account? Not this guy! After placing a £50 ($81) bet 10 years ago, an anonymous gambler has pocketed £25,000 ($40,520).
It was a decade ago when the man played a round of golf with a very naive, yet impressive Rory McIlroy. He left the Holywood Golf Club in Northern Ireland absolutely bewildered by the young Irishman's performance. How did he react? Well, he ran to the nearest bookies!
Although the odds stood at 500-1, the man predicted that McIlroy would win one of golf’s top four championships before reaching the age of 25. He wasn’t wrong. The 22-year-old claimed the 111th US Open this past weekend, pushing aside Bobby Jones to become the youngest champion since 1923.
Gerry McIlroy, Rory's proud father, may also be in the money. He and his friends also placed a similar bet - for Rory to win the Open Championship (which takes place next month) before turning 25. They each placed £100 ($162) at the same odds, although the bookies are now starting to regret it.
Rory made £778,450 ($1.26 million) after his incredible victory on Sunday, and will capture a further £850,000 ($1.38 million) should he win the Open Championship.
