A satirical book 'Go the F*** to Sleep' by Adam Mansbach and Ricardo Cortés is read live by Samuel L. Jackson on The Late Show with David Letterman, gains attention on the Internet.
A parenting gag-book turned viral Internet phenomenon is gaining popularity and controversy after being read on late night television by a Hollywood celebrity Thursday.
An excerpt from ‘Go the F**k to Sleep’, a 32-page book of humour written by Adam Mansbach, was read by actor Samuel L. Jackson on The Late Show with David Letterman on Thursday night.
The publication, illustrated by Ricardo Cortés, has been gaining attention. It looks like a children's book, inside and out, but reads like a parody, using vulgarity and brutal honesty.
In addition to the television appearance, Jackson recently released a six-minute recorded narration of the book, available for a limited time as a free download at A YouTube video featuring German film director Werner Herzog reading the book has also surfaced, who plans to release his own audiobook recording.
Mansbach described Herzog as the “best possible person in the world” to narrate the publication.
The title was created from a Facebook post written last June out of fatigue, Mansbach told the New York Times, due to his daughter’s unwillingness to go to sleep, and wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.
Almost a year later, the book was released by Akashic Books, an independent publishing house in Brooklyn, NY. It is both a New York Times and best-seller, according to the publisher’s website.
The book has received some backlash, however, having prompted a New Zealand pro-family lobby group to call for a ban of its sale in the country’s bookstores.
Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ, said that it is "disturbing" that it is disguised as a children’s book.
The book, which Mansbach calls a “children’s book for adults”, contains lines such as “The cubs and the lions are snoring, / Wrapped in a big snugly heap, / How come you can do all this other great sh-t / But you can’t lie the f--- down and sleep?
A professor of fiction at Rutgers University, Mansbach has also published books with titles such as ‘The End of the Jews’ and ‘Angry White Black Boy’.
