Ottawa - Ottawa – Goings On for Canada Day 2011.
Celebrate a unique nation with an international flair--here are some of the most interesting events happening in Ottawa on July 1, 2011.
Canada’s 143rd birthday is going to be a big one, quite possibly the largest party Parliament Hill has ever seen. Ottawa is anticipating the biggest turnout ever for Canada Day celebrations thanks to hundreds of musical performances and an appearance from visiting royals Prince William and his new wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Kate (neé Middleton) is visiting North America for her first time; as the royal newlyweds are kicking off their tour in Ottawa on July 1, they’re in for a lively Canadian experience, to say the least.
The Canadian capitol is the ideal location to celebrate Canada Day, with celebrations lasting from dawn until well after dusk, all over the city. The main sites for this year’s celebrations are Confederation Park, Jacques-Cartier Park, Major’s Hill Park and, of course, Parliament Hill. Hundreds of thousands of Canadians will be out to celebrate their nation’s birthday with concerts, picnics, fireworks and other special activities. There’s no better day to visit Ottawa if you are looking for an authentic look at the Canadian spirit.
Here are five spectacular events to check out in Ottawa over the Canada Day Holiday:
Parliament Hill
With activities taking place from 9 AM until long after nightfall, it’s entirely possible to spend the entire holiday upon the hill (just remember your water and sunscreen if you’re going to do that). Spectators will witness the flag-raising ceremony in the morning, the royal appearance at noon, the many musical talents of Canada through ongoing concert performances and the evening show culminating in celebratory fireworks at approximately 10 PM. Major’s Hill Park
Canada Day fun for the whole family abounds all day at Major’s Hill Park with shows and activities centring on the theme of Canadian diversity and self-expression. Celebrate Canadian multiculturalism through song, dance, crafts and Canada’s international cuisine. Again, activities are ongoing all day—for more information about the Canada Day schedule at Major’s Hill Park, click here.
Jacques Cartier Park
This park, located across the Ottawa River in Gatineau, Quebec, is also celebrating Canadian heritage through an all-day family event themed around creativity and curiosity. An International Village is planned, featuring performers and instructors of varying cultures on hand to invite visitors to experience the different musical and artistic traditions of Canada’s diverse peoples. Confederation Park
Starting at 11 AM, Confederation Park is the site of the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and presenting FREE concerts all day long. This year’s festival is eclectic, featuring many fantastic musicians from Canada and beyond such as Elvis Costello, Brad Mehldau, Shad, kd lang, and many more. With so much going on in the city, one may opt simply for some Ottawa roofing to sit on, just to take it all in! Museum of Civilization
The Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec is truly one of Canada’s most spectacular collections of knowledge. For Canada’s birthday this year, the museum is offering free admission from 9 AM – 9 PM and projecting the Parliament Hill celebrations onto its giant outdoor screen. In addition to the museum’s impressive collection of stories and artefacts of Canadian history, there will be also be presentations of short films submitted by winners of Radio-Canada International’s contest The Roots Challenge.
