A police chief told the BBC
that a man had complained to village elders that two other men had sex with his wife.
The Hindustan Times
reported that the woman became pregnant while her husband was away, and accused two men of raping her.
A village council advised the man to divorce his wife.
After that the man, along with four others, decided to go after the suspects. When they arrived at a house looking for them they found a woman, who is reported to be the mother of one or two of the rape suspects.
"They dragged her out, tore up her clothes and forced her to walk naked on the street," the Times of India
quoted police official Akhtar Nawaz as saying.
"No one has come to lodge a formal complaint. Police registered a case themselves after receiving reports from local residents."
Police said villagers did not try to stop them because the offenders were armed.
The BBC reported that a case has been registered against seven people, but only two have yet been arrested, and police are searching for the others.
