On Nov. 15, 2010 Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art released a statement
indicating that "Four masterworks from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art permanent collection will be on view just a short drive from Northwest Arkansas. The works are on loan to the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Okla., through May 15, 2011."
Fortunately I had not read that statement prior to traveling to Tulsa, Okla. on May 28. Otherwise, I would not have visited the Philbrook Museum of Art
specifically to see the masterpieces on loan from Crystal Bridges. As luck would have it, I was oblivious to the May 15 deadline and, obviously, the deadline date was pushed back.
I did, however, know that the Philbrook Museum had a number of paintings that would eventually make their way to Crystal Bridges. I was given permission by the Philbrook Museum to take photographs, and here are photographs of three out of the four paintings belonging to Crystal Bridges that were on exhibit at the Philbrook:
The fourth is October Interior
, a 1963 oil on canvas by Fairfield Porter.
Today, after coming across the press release above, I learned of my accidental good fortune in that I saw the paintings at the Philbrook Museum two weeks after they were scheduled to leave.
Curious if the paintings were still at the Philbrook Museum, I called the museum and was told that they had been taken down yesterday, June 13, and are on their way to Crystal Bridges
temporary location in Bentonville, Ark. The temporary space
in downtown Bentonville is called preVIEW of Crystal Bridges.
I was told that the four paintings that had been on loan to the Philbrook would be put in storage until closer to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art's opening date on 11-11-11.
