Toronto - It has been announced that former Mayor of Toronto David Miller has been named Future of Cities Global Fellow by Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly). The former mayor will assist in the school’s urban strategies.
David Miller finished his seven-year tenure as Mayor of Toronto in December. In an interview with a local news outlet, Miller said he planned to take a long vacation and take an advisory position at the World Bank on urban issues.
The former Toronto mayor co-authored a book titled “Witness to a City,” which profiled various members of the city that made significant contributions to Toronto.
Half a year since leaving office, Miller has landed a teaching position at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University where he will develop courses, lecture students and help invigorate the institute’s strategy on urban technology.
“I am very pleased to join NYU-Poly,” said Miller in a statement. “Its long history as a respected institution for engineering innovation, its approach to education and its global collaborations with NYU create a unique opportunity to help its students – and the world – find solutions to pressing urban issues that can improve livability, prosperity and opportunity for all.”
The school alluded to Miller’s former leadership role at the C-40 Cities Climate Leadership Group from 2008 to 2010. When Miller left office, he was immediately recognized as an innovator of economic development and environmental sustainability.
Toronto also received a number of honours from The Climate Group, including the low carbon leadership award.
“NYU-Poly identified urban technology as one of our three highest academic priorities, befitting our mission as a comprehensive school of engineering located in one of the world's great urban centers,” said Diane Rekow, NYU-poly Provost. “Mayor Miller's unique insight will guide us as we explore the interplay between intelligent city infrastructure and economic, environmental and social sustainability.”
