article image2011 MLB draft kicks off

By Al Boe     Jun 6, 2011 in Sports
The 2011 MLB first-year player draft kicked off Monday evening, with the Pittsburgh Pirates picking UCLA pitcher Gerrit Cole with the first pick overall.
Cole, who was widely considered to be the best arm in the draft, just finished his junior season for the Bruins. He had his worst year of his college career this year, going 6-8 with a 3.31 ERA.
With the 2nd overall pick, Seattle shocked many who expected them to select Rice infielder Anthony Rendon, by instead selecting another pitcher, Danny Hultzen.
All of the first four selections were pitchers, including Trevor Bauer who went 3rd to the Diamondbacks. His delivery is very similar to Tim Lincecum's and he lead the NCAA in strikeouts this year.
