The hand injury Quinton “Rampage” Jackson revealed after his win over Matt Hamill, won’t keep him from challenging for the UFC Light Heavyweight title according to champion Jon Jones.
“I’ll be fighting Quinton Rampage Jackson next. I’m not allowed to discuss the date because I didn’t sign a contract, but yeah, it will be very soon,” said Jones in an interview with MMAjunkie.com.
There was talk that Lyoto Machida may be called upon to fight Jones for the title if Rampage was not ready to go, but it seems now that the injury isn’t as serious as was initially believed.
This fight would be the first title defense for Jones (13-1) after his brutal third round TKO win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 in March, where he became the youngest champion in UFC history.
Rashad Evans was originally intended to be given the next shot at the winner, but a hand injury to Jones forced the UFC to put Evans into a match with Phil Davis at UFC 133 instead.
Rampage (32-8) is a former champion in the UFC, beating Chuck Liddell for the title in 2007 before losing it to Forrest Griffin a year later. He has been criticized by fans for his performances in his last two wins against Matt Hamill and Lyoto Machida, but White stated after UFC 130 that if Jackson’s injury wasn’t serious he would be fighting for the title.
The fight has not been officially announced but is being rumoured to take place at UFC 135 on September 24 in Denver, Colorado.
