Santiago - A 22 year-old man suffered the amputation of both hands and severe burns when the explosive device he was attempting to install in the ATM section of a bank exploded prematurely. A disturbing video recorded the event.
The incident occurred Wednesday night at about 2:30 AM when the young man, identified as Luciano Pitronello, who according to the prosecution is suspected of belonging to an anarchist group, entered the ATM area of a branch of the Bank of Santander located at the intersection of Victoria Street and Vicuña Mackenna Avenue in downtown Santiago de Chile.
Apparently the explosive device he was manipulating exploded unexpectedly. As a result he suffered severe injures in his arms and face and serious burns to extensive parts of his body. A second person who accompanied Pitronello at the time left the scene and has not yet been found by police.
According to eyewitness accounts, following the explosion the young man walked out of the bank in shock where he became engulfed in flames. A video camera outside the bank registered the explosion and the man on fire after he walked out the ATM section of the bank. He was assisted by a taxi driver passing at the location of the explosion who used his fire extinguisher to put off the flames. Soon after the incident the taxi driver left the scene and police has not been able to locate him. Eyewitness called police and ambulance. After being treated in the street due to the severity of his injuries, the man was taken to hospital and had both hands amputated. Reports indicate that he may also lose his eyesight.
According to information provided by the police, Pitronello had already been the subject of an investigation since 2009 in connection with previous bomb incidents. A motorcycle supposedly belonging to the suspect was later found in the vicinity of the bank. It had been parked there for several hours after the incident and is being investigated for traces of explosive materials, reported La Tercera (in Spanish).
A website 325nostate.net advocating anarchist ideology published today the following statement: Comrade Luciano Pitronello Schuffeneger is seriously injured after a bombing accident. This young brother has lost his eyes and arms in an act of social war, and could lose his life over the next days. He is under arrest in the hospital with searches and investigations beginning for his circle. The hospital has been banned from giving any more information about his condition. Our hearts, force and power to Luciano and his friends and family.
