Nick Diaz gets next shot at Welterweight King Georges St-Pierre

By Ustad Khaira     Jun 1, 2011 in Sports
The UFC has booked the main event of UFC 137 in October, UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre vs Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz.
This bout has been rumoured to be in the works ever since GSP defeated Jake Shields in front of 55,000 people in Toronto, with some reports stating that it would take place December in Montreal at UFC 140.
UFC President Dana White denied all speculation that the two were set to faceoff but announced on his twitter page today that the fight would indeed happen.
“U wanted it! U GOT IT!!! GSP vs DIAZ Oct 29th UFC 137 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.”
This fight marks the first crossover between UFC and Strikeforce since Zuffa purchased their biggest competitor earlier this year, but there is no word yet on whether it will be a title unification match.
Nick Diaz (25-7, 1 NC) has said many times over the years that he would like to fight GSP but because he fought for a different organization it was not possible until now.
He will pose a different threat to St-Pierre (22-2) than previous opponents, he will likely not be afraid to attack the champion and will force GSP to finish the fight before a decision, something he has been criticized for not being able to do since a doctors stoppage at the end of the fourth round against BJ Penn in January 2009. Diaz has shown an ability to take a lot of damage and continue moving forward, most recently in his win over Paul Daley in April.
UFC 137 is scheduled for October 29, 2011 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
