article imageMMA Legends to Fight in July: Fedor vs Henderson confirmed

By Ustad Khaira     May 31, 2011 in Sports
Strikeforce has confirmed that two legends of MMA will meet this July. Fedor Emelianenko, considered by many to be the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, faces Dan Henderson on July 30 in Chicago.
Despite rumours that the two would fight at a catchweight of 220 pounds, the fight will take place in the heavyweight division, though both fighters will likely come in well below the 265 pound limit during the weigh-in.
Fedor (31-3, 1 NC) is coming off two straight losses (his first losses in close to a decade), the last being a crushing doctors stoppage at the end of the second round against Antonio “Big Foot” Silva in the quarter-finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. There was talk after the fight that Emelianenko would retire but they were quickly put to rest after discussion of a possible bout with Henderson began.
Henderson (27-8) on the other hand has two wins in a row, winning the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship from Rafael Cavalcante via third round TKO in March and knocking out Renato “Babalu” Sobral in the first round four months earlier.
Both fighters have had decorated careers, 34-year-old Fedor being a former Pride Heavyweight Champion and 40-year-old Henderson the former Pride Middleweight and Welterweight Champion.
While Fedor has opened as a favourite in this fight, Henderson has the power in his hands to end the bout with one punch.
Other rumoured bouts on the card include former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed Lawal vs Roger Gracie, Rafael Cavalcante vs Ovince St. Preux, and Evangelista Santos vs Tarec Saffiedine.
Strikeforce: Fedor vs Henderson takes place on July 30, 2011 at the Sears Centre in Illinois.
