In what started out as one of the most musically diverse seasons of American Idol ended up as country showdown between Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, and when the votes were counted McCreery came out on top and was crowned winner of American Idol.
In the season 10 finale of American Idol the contestants were given the opportunity to perform three more songs for fans of the number one singing show.
Scotty McCreery sang Montgomery Gentry’s, 'Gone,' George Strait's 'Check Yes or No,' and a song recorded by him and set to be released tomorrow, 'I Love You This Big.'
Lauren Alaina delighted the audience, and her mother, with Carrie Underwood’s, 'Flat on the Floor,' Pam Tillis’s 'Maybe it was Memphis,' and 'Like My Mother Does.'
After the judges gave part one of the competition to Alaina it appeared McCreery was now the underdog leading in to part two of the finale, and would have to settle for runner-up.
But McCreery fans had a different winner in mind, and with over 122 million votes cast by fans of the youngest two performers to compete in an American Idol finale they got their way.
Scotty McCreery ended the night with an encore performance of 'I Love You This Big,' which he barely got through as he made his way into the audience to extend some of that love to his waiting family.
The Top 11 American Idol finalists will take the stage again for the hit show on the 2011 tour, dates and venues can be found on the Idol website, along with video of each performance by McCreery and Alaina and the other finalists.
Season 11 auditions are scheduled to begin June 28 in St. Louis.
