Orlando - In the opening statement of Casey Anthony's murder trail where she is accused of killing her two-year-old daughter Caylee Anthony, her defense attorney Jose Baez said the girl accidentally drowned on June 16, 2008 in the backyard swimming pool.
This is a case that had international attention three years ago when the child, Caylee Anthony, went missing for 31 days in Orlando, Florida. Her mother, Casey Anthony, was later charged with murder after she failed to report the child missing.
Defense attorney Jose Baez claims George Anthony, Casey's father, was aware of the death and he allegedly scolded Casey. Baez says he will prove at trial how Casey's parents, Cindy and George, were well aware of the whole situation.
This is a tragedy that snowballed out of control," Baez said in his opening statements. "This is not a murder case. This is not a manslaughter case ... this is a tragic accident that happened to some very disturbed people."
It is also alleged by the defense attorney that Casey was "taught to lie" at a very young age and was just following the teachings of her family during the outcome of this tragedy.
He also alleges that Casey was sexually abused as a child by her father who is a retired Sheriff's Deputy in Florida.
Casey's father George attempted suicide about a year after the death of his granddaughter. He had never said if he was aware of the child drowning in the backyard swimming pool.
George is at the trial with his wife Cindy, Casey's mother, and the two have been instructed by the trial judge not to show any emotion or they will be ejected from the courtroom.
The trial is expected to last two months and can be watched live online here when court is in session.
