article imageCasey Anthony attorney: Caylee drowned in family pool

By Paul Bright     May 24, 2011 in Crime
Orlando - The trial of Casey Anthony, accused of killing her daughter Caylee, has finally begun. Opening arguments by her defense attorney reveal a surprising twist: He claims Caylee drowned in a pool.
The Casey Anthony trial has taken a dramatic turn already.
In the opening statements, Anthony’s attorney Jose Baez claims Casey’s daughter, Caylee had actually drowned in the family’s swimming pool on June 16, 2008. Baez also claims that Casey’s father George found the body and helped dispose of it.
Baez’ opening statement also claims Anthony hid the body and the truth just as she hid another family secret: She had been sexually abused as a child.
"On June 16, 2008, after Caylee died, Casey did what she's been doing all her life," Baez told the court. "Hiding her pain, going into that dark corner and pretending that she does not live in the situation that she's living in... it all began when Casey was 8 years old and her father came into her room and began to touch her inappropriately and it escalated. Casey Anthony was raised to lie. Sex abuse does things to us, it changes you."
Casey Anthony is accused of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, aggravated child abuse and providing false information to law enforcement.
Casey allegedly hid the body after Father's Day in 2008 before she was discovered on December 11, 2008. Caylee's body was wrapped in a blanket, stuffed in garbage bags, and disposed of into a swamp. Casey also went missing for 31 days, apparently getting tattoos and contacting her boyfriend. Anthony told several stories as to her daughter’s whereabouts when confronted by relatives and investigators. The last claim was that a babysitter kidnapped her.
Other evidence also appears to contradict the attorney’s claim. The trunk of Anthony’s car tested positive for chloroform and decomposition. Caylee was also found to have duct tape over her mouth and nose and it was positioned to where it would not be easily removed.
