article imageToronto EMS Citizen Awards given out Special

By KJ Mullins     May 20, 2011 in World
Toronto - Last night citizens of Toronto were honoured by Toronto's EMS for going over and beyond during a ceremony at EMS Headquarters.
Starting with a Flag Presentation, Leo Leach's rending of O Canada and the EMS Prayer by Chaplain Rev. Walter Kelly the EMS celebrated people in the community who had given of themselves this year to save or help another along with media awards.
The stories of the citizens who saved a life were inspiring but those of the children who are already heroes at tender ages brought tears to the eyes of many in the audience. From a little boy, Liam Kirk who was a mere 2 and a half when he heard his elderly neighbour screaming for help and acted on those screams saving her life to two young boys Eamon Robinson and Rowan Gray whose family members are alive because of their actions Toronto has much to be proud of. One man Basil Pinnock saved not one person this year but three from choking to death.
There were several people who were celebrated in Toronto, each of their stories showed how important citizens are to the EMS. That message was heard time and again during the ceremony, that without the people of this city the EMS can't give back. Citizens are the ones who make the calls in and who stay by the side of those in need until the paramedics arrive.
Valour in the line of duty was also awarded to fire fighter Derek Mullan, Constables Jennifer Reed-Pyefinch, Jo-Anne Bortoluss and William Poulimenos and Staff Sergeant Ross Cook.
Jennifer Laframboise was awarded Emergency Medical Dispatcher of the Year.
Kathryn Stocks, editor at the Toronto Star, won the print media award and K.J. Mullins, a Digital Journalist and editor of newz4u.net, won the new media award. Audra Brown and Lauren McNabb won for media within the paramedic community and Rob Lamberti, Toronto Sun won for best photo of the year.
