Los Angeles - It was down to the homestretch this week for the top 3 American Idol contestants, who spent the weekend visiting their hometown before appearing one more time on the Idol stage, where they battled for a place in next week's finale
After a few months of anticipation that included auditioning, learning new songs and competing each week Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart gave it there all in what will be the final performance for one of the contestants.
Each contestant performed three songs this week, one they chose for themselves, one song picked by Jimmy lovine and lastly one selected by the American Idol judges.
The first round featured the personal favorite of each of the three Idol's. Scotty McCreery selected Lonestar's 'Amazed' for his first song of the night. Lauren Alaina picked 'Wild One' by Faith Hill and Haley Reinhart closed out the round with Led Zeppelin's 'What Is and What Should Never Be.'
The American Idol Judges all gave the first round to Reinhart, when polled by host Ryan Seacrest.
In round two, McCreery returned to the stage to sing a song chosen by Jimmy lovine, who picked 'Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not. Up next was Alaina, who was assigned 'If I Die Young' by The Band Perry. Reinhart ended the round with Fleetwood Mac's 'Rhiannon.'
The Idol judges were split that round with Steven Tyler giving it to Alaina, while Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez favored the performance by McCreery..
For the third and final round, the Idol contestants took the stage to perform the judges pick, McCreery sang 'She Believes in Me,' by Kenny Rogers. Alaina followed with Lee Ann Womack's 'I Hope You Dance, and the last song of the night was sung by Reinhart, a cover of Alanis Morissette's 'You Oughta Know.
Lopez and Jackson gave the final round to Alaina, with Tyler saying the round belonged to Reinhart.
American Idol fans tuned in Wednesday night for the next to the last performance, and then showed their support for their favorites with a record number of votes recorded, ninety-five million, the highest total ever for the semi-final, according to Seacrest.
With the journey about to end for one contestant, the show went on tonight featuring video clips filmed by each contestant during their hometown visits.
With their future in the hands of the fans, the three Idol hopefuls took the stage with Seacrest, one last time, to hear their fate. After the fan generated nationwide votes were counted, American Idol contestant Haley Reinhart received the unwanted news that she had received the least number of votes.
Reinhart left the stage after one finale performance of Elton John's 'Bennie and the Jets.' She will be remembered as a class act, with a promising music career in her future and a place on the American Idol national tour. Haley summed up her Idol experience by saying, 'she rocked it out and had a blast and this is only the beginning."
American Idol moves up a day next week on the Fox programming schedule. The final performances by the top two singers, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, will be shown on television on Tuesday night, May 24th, and the results everyone has been waiting to hear, who will win the competition for Season 10 American Idol, to be aired on Wednesday night, May 25th.
