La Paz - Linda Gueiler, the only female president in Bolivia’s history, died this past Monday at the age of 89. Gueiler's reign lasted 8 months, stemming from 1979-1980.
Her death was confirmed by her grandson, Luis Eduardo Siles, who was interviewed for a local radio station. While the cause of death wasn’t specified, it is understood that Gueiler had been sick for weeks beforehand.
In regards to his grandmother, Siles said, she was a “historic figure not only for Bolivia but also for all of Latin America."
Bolivia’s current President, Evo Morales, has also sent his condolences to the Gueiler family, and has confirmed that the former President will receive a state funeral.
President Gueiler’s reign ran from 1979-1980, before she “fled into exile after her ouster”.
